Weak LoP, anti-party activities down fall of Cong: Defeated candidates to Patil

MARGAO: Defeated Congress candidates from South Goa District, besides other party leaders including office-bearers of the block committees on Thursday made a point to complain about the anti-party activities at the time of elections before the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Observer Rajani Patil.

Many Congressmen have also pointed fingers against Margao MLA Digambar Kamat alleging that he was the weakest Leader of Opposition for the last five years, and failed to give justice to the chair, resulting in divisions amongst the party workers.

Congress held a meeting with all the concerned candidates and office-bearers of the block committees at the South Goa District Office for almost half a day, wherein scenes of cross allegations against the party leaders were also witnessed.

Patil, who has been deputed to Goa by the AICC to review the reasons for the party’s defeat, said that party leaders will take decisions pertaining to taking action against those involved in the anti-party activities during the elections.

Many have suggested to the party observer about the change in leadership, besides strong Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

Speaking to the media persons, Patil said, “I have met several elected MLAs and defeated candidates from North and South Goa, besides office-bearers of State and block committees,” she stated.

She further admitted that there were some complaints pertaining to anti-party activities.

Being a chairman of the Screening Committee to decide the candidates she feels disappointed and not a failure for Congress’ defeat in the State.

“I was assured that the people in Goa will definitely vote for a secular party, and the atmosphere was totally anti-BJP.  I had not anticipated the division in secular votes, which has resulted in Congress’ defeat,” the Congress observer observed.
