PONDA: Affirming that the danger of riding without helmets is equally severe on highways and internal roads, speakers at a helmet awareness programme in Ponda appealed to two-wheeler riders to promote the use of helmets for their safety.
“It is necessary to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers on highways and internal roads, as the both roads are made of tar and in case of accident the impact remains the same,” Dr Avdoot Manerkar.
“Those who sustain head injuries need to go in for costly operations. Sometimes, they go into coma, paralysis and even if they survive, they could suffer from a physical disability due to head injury,” said Dr Manerkar.
“We buy life insurances amounting to Rs 10 to 20 lakh, but why can’t we buy helmets which hardly costs Rs 1,000? It will not only save our lives, but also help the family dependent on us,” Dr Manerkar added.
Claiming that pillion riders should also wear helmets, Dr Manerkar added: “Taxi motorcycle pilots in Goa should ask their customer pillion riders to keep handkerchief on head and use the helmet. In this manner, one helmet can be used by several people,” he added.
People of Ponda and Ponda Traffic Cell jointly organised helmet awareness drive at Ponda. The programme was organised at Vishwa Hinud Parishad hall, Khadpaband Ponda. People of Ponda President Dr Rajendra Dev, Traffic Cell PI Nilesh Diagodkar, Dr Avduth Manerkar, Manoj Ganokar and others were present for the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Traffic PI Diagodkar said it is necessary to wear helmet to prevent rising accidents and deaths of young people.
