PANJIM: The thunder and shower of Wednesday evening wreaked havoc for various sections of society.
One of the worst affected were farmer groups as their standing crops were damaged with the heavy downpour along with the strong winds. Farmers were distraught over this as they were not anticipating this and their future plans have also been affected by this. A farmer who was growing rice said the government should be doing more to ensure there are adequate and unblocked pathways for water to flow out from their fields as opposed to getting accumulated. Water could be seen on fields across Goa on Thursday too.
Elsewhere, motorists and commuters were terribly inconvenienced due to water-logged roads. Several vehicles broke down as they were stuck on the roads where the water was up to the knee-level of pedestrians.
Vehicles parked by the side of the streets like the 18 June road Panjim too were affected with water filling up the footpaths in front of commercial shops on either side of the road.
Panjim, which is prone to flooding whenever it rains heavily, even saw residents in some wards like Miramar complain of water entering their houses and questioned the assurances given by the authorities that such issues would not reoccur. This was seen in other parts of Goa too.
Shack owners who were setting up their shacks and hoping it would be ready by the weekend were also upset with the delay the heavy post-monsoon downpour caused. Several tourist establishments like eco resorts along the coastal belt saw damage to the trees in their properties.
