MARGAO: The Benaulim village panchayat has reiterated that it has been carrying out due diligence regarding the Western Bypass issue and has rejected the criticism levelled against them.
“People who lay allegations on the Panchayat should first introspect as to their contribution in finalising the legal case. We are unfazed. This panchayat does not wish to wash its dirty linen in public. Ultimately, it’s only the truth that will prevail,” said Sarpanch Xavier Pereira.
The Sarpanch has also convened a meeting with all the panchayat and Western Bypass committee members on February 10, at 4 pm, in the village panchayat hall to discuss and update them on the matter of the bypass on stilts. Reacting to the villagers’ demand for filing a petition in the court, Pereira emphasized that such matters take time as there is a lot of follow up work that needs to be done before they approach the court. He stressed that the panchayat has been doing the needful. It may be recalled that the gram sabha of Benaulim had demanded that the panchayat take immediate steps to file a petition in the appropriate court to stop reclamation of fields and to demand that the bypass be constructed on stilts instead of embankments.
