MARGAO, MARCH 28
The Sonsodo dumping yard may have been a drain on the Margao Municipal coffers for long over its maintenance.
But, hold on. The wet and plastic waste dumped at the site may as well bring in handsome revenue to the Civic body from now onwards.
For, rich compost valued over Rs 1 lakh is presently awaiting disposal from the dump yard. So is the case with the bails of crude plastic.
If Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho is to be believed, the Civic body has now decided to dispose off the compost via auction scheduled on April 2 at 10 am at the Sonsodo dumping site.
Giving details of the auction materials, Chief Officer Y B Tawde said around 10,000 kg of vegetable compost and 15,000 kg of fish and meat compost is awaiting disposal.
The Civic body has set an upset price of Rs 3 per kg and Rs 5 per kg for vegetable compost and fish and meant compost respectively.
Besides, around 200 bails of crude plastic, each bail weighing 25 kg will be put up for auction. The upset value fixed for a bail of plastic is Rs 2 per kg.
Incidentally, vegetable and fish compost weighing Rs 5 lakh was reduced to ashes at Sonsodo during the week-long fire that engulfed the dumping site early February.
Segregation and composting of waste began at Sonsodo after the Margao Municipal Council engaged Mapusa-based NGO, Goa Foundation to tackle the 50-tonnes of waste dumped at the site on a daily basis.
Around 30 workers are presently engaged at the site for the segregation of the daily waste received at Sonsodo.
