I have undertaken several field trips in Goa and Kerala to realise the grave dangers to our coastline when dunes are not protected. Today shacks are randomly constructed cutting across the dune lines, water pipelines are dug through sand and soak pits dug with no sense of hygiene, and above all, illegally. Without going into the specific nature of the events that happened in Utorda, the larger reality is that if beaches are not kept free of shacks and they don’t get refreshed and rejuvenated from the winds, there will be no beaches left. Very few understand this.
When the CRZ notification 2011 is the only Bible to protect our coasts
Antonio Mascarenhas, a man of science, has only one mission - protect the beaches and ensure that they get time to breathe and rejuvenate. He is completely un-compromising and states that there will be no Goa, unless sand dunes and beaches are protected.
