Margao: Cleaning of the tar surface and the outer parking areas of the wholesale fish market was done on Wedneday.
The cleaning was done jointly by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and the Levy Collection & Maintenance contractor of the SGPDA wholesale fish market.
Tankers of water were sprayed and the surface of the market yard, cleaning the scrap fish and fish left over after the trade activity on Wednesday.
The outer parking areas and the landscaping dividing the market areas and road in front had dense vegetation grown, which were also cleaned.
A fisherwoman Geraldina Cardozo said, “After a while, I have seen someone cleaning the surface of the market thoroughly. This was generally done in summers. This work is needful as the fish starts to decompose and creates health hazards and inconvenience to all.”
The MMC staff and the contractor jointly also cleared the vegetation that had grown over the landscaping outside the wholesale fish market. It is informed that the District Collector has ordered the upkeep of the market.
The Levy Collection & Maintenance Contractor Milagres Fernandes said that there have been constant complaints from Madel people that the smell of the rotten fish has been causing troubles to them.
“I called on the services of a water tanker and got the surface cleaned which will surely reduce the misery of the Madelkars,” he said.
Noticing that the street lights at the market are not working, Milagres said that he has also got them repaired.
