‘Why should we accept a rejected Mini India theme park project?’

Pednekars allege that the objection process is just for namesake and a mere formality

MAPUSA: Objecting to the proposed ‘Mini India’ theme park project in Pernem, activists, and citizens have sought an explanation from Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho as to why the people of Pernem should accept a project, which was rejected at two earlier locations.

A hearing on the objections filed against the theme park project was held before the Industries Department officials.

After the hearing, activist Swapnesh Sherlekar, who filed his objection, said, “We have pointed out that a leopard was spotted in the property, so we have brought this to the notice of the authorities and filed an objection. We strongly object to this theme park and don’t want such projects in Pernem. The government is talking about providing employment but those jobs are security, housekeeping, etc.”

He further questioned whether the government was expecting the youth of Pernem, who are graduates, to take up such jobs? “We strongly oppose this project,” Sherlekar said.

Alleging that the objection process is just for namesake and a mere formality, Adv Jitendra Gaonkar said, “The officer who headed the hearing is a CEO of Investment Promotion Board (IPB) and also the Director of Industries. The objections are against the IPB and the same officer is hearing them.”

Gaonkar said, “The land, which is acquired for the project, is in the irrigation command area, which is a buffer zone as well as a no development zone (NDZ). We want to question Godinho why he is trying to get a project in Pernem which was already rejected.”

“What changes have been made in the project for which we should accept it and what are the benefits of the project? Under the name of development, Mopa Airport came into existence due to which the people are suffering,” he added
