MARGAO: There is only one voice that is heard among those sympathetic to Churchill Alemao’s woes and that is “he was unnecessarily harassed when big fish like Digambar Kamat was not arrested”.
A large number of supporters visited Alemao’s residence at Varca to express their solidarity and all were in agreement with the way Alemao lambasted the authorities for the manner in which he had been ‘targetted’.
They were not concerned about the charges against Alemao and were of the view that double set of rules were applied in the JICA case, and could not fathom how Alemao was denied bail on many occasions, when the police had failed to arrest Digambar even after 2 months.
While Alemao was not in the mood to speak to the media stating that he would address them at length after a few days, he reiterated what he said on the day of his release that he was thankful to Jesus, priests and lawyers.
He was seen telling his supporters about the various people ranging from elected representatives and politicians from both the BJP and the Congress visited him when he was in jail.
He was particularly thankful to those from his former constituencies who made the trip, were expressing the various issues he had to face when he was in jail and also recounting how he was arrested.
It maybe recalled that Alemao had publicly confirmed that he would be willing to contest the elections before his arrest and the show of strength at Varca would have given him more than enough encouragement to continue with his election pursuits once the heat of the Crime Branch JICA investigation dies down.
