MAYEM: Trees got uprooted at many places in Bicholim and Sattari talukas, causing losses to farmers and the general public.

Torrential rain accompanied by cyclonic wind lashed the talukas, resulting in uprooting of trees at many places since Friday.

A large number of banana, betel nuts and other plantations have been destroyed in Nanora, Latambarcem, Sal, Vathadev, Karapur-Sarvan and surrounding villages in Bicholim taluka and Kerim, Poriem, Morlem and surrounding villages in Sattari taluka, due to which farmers have suffered damages.

Power supply was also disrupted at many places and was restored only on Sunday. Telephone service was also paralyzed at different places.

Valpoi Municipal Council Chairperson Mohamed Beig suffered a loss of Rs 25,000 after a truck owned by him was partially gutted in fire, which broke out due to a short circuit caused by the falling of a tree on an electricity cable.

Fire personnel from Bicholim and Sattari fire stations have been clearing the debris over the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, affected farmers have demanded compensation from the State government for losses suffered.
