WiFi towers at Fatorda are illegal, says MMC

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Yeshwant Tawde has revealed that WiFi towers at Fatorda are illegal as they have not received clearances from the municipality.

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Yeshwant Tawde has revealed that WiFi towers at Fatorda are illegal as they have not received clearances from the municipality. He also conceded that the municipality’s technical section had failed to stop the installation of the same.
The MMC has now drawn show cause notices for the five – six towers at Fatorda. CO Tawde stated, “We have written a letter to the police and also issued show cause notices to the culprits. Informing the police is all we can do to stop the installation of the towers. MMC does not have any heavy machinery to remove the towers,” said CO Tawde.
When questioned on the issue, MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva stated, “I think every government is supporting the installation of the towers. MMC has been bypassed in the WiFi project and its properties are being used without proper permission.”
On Sunday, over 20 residents of Rawanfond had filed a complaint against the chief executive officer of Reliance Jio, which is setting up 4G towers in Margao and Fatorda. They also met D’Silva and demanded the immediate removal of the towers.
D’Silva has expressed concern that Reliance Jio, being a large company, may file individual complaints against them. He has requested them to inform the municipality before taking any action.
In the last 16 hours, there have been two cases of Ravanfond and Gogal residents stopping the installation of WiFi towers.
