Wild boar raid chilli plantation in Mandrem, farmers raise alarm, demand compensation

Say now they are forced to sleep in the fields to protect their crop since its their only source of livelihood

MANDREM: Herds of wild boar have wreaked havoc in fields at Mandrem and destroyed the entire chilli plantation in fields at Sawant Wada. The devastation has left farmers in dire straits

who demanded immediate intervention from the agriculture department to prevent the animals from causing more damage to their standing crops due to which they have suffered losses..

“Four days ago wild boar came and destroyed our entire plantation . We have toiled for the last four months to cultivate the chilli plants, plus there is acute water shortage. We get water once in 9 days. We have not informed the Agriculture Department, but we have told the Mandrem panchayat ward member. He has assured us to give a pump and on Monday he said he will call the Zonal Agriculture Officer to show the devastation caused by wild animals,” Farmer Devu Mandrekar said.

“Just at the time of harvesting, we are suffering this devastation. Last night, a herd of wild board came at 3 am and destroyed the crop. Now we sleep in the fields to keep a watch. We solely depend on our fields for a living,”  Mandrekar added.
