SANGUEM: Exhausted firefighters and Forest Department personnel in Sanguem, Kalay and Netravali were called out to tackle forest and dry grass fires for the third day in succession on Thursday. Despite their efforts, the wildfire at Kariamol, Kalay, which began three days ago, continued to spread, said former Sarpanch of Kalay panchayat, Kishore Rama Gauns Dessai.
“As the area is inaccessible, the fire had to be put out exclusively with human labour. The fire has been contained to some extent today. As the area is covered with dry grass and sticks, it was very difficult to contain the fire, which kept raging due to the strong winds and hot weather,” said Dessai.
Meanwhile, a ground fire was reported at Rivona on Thursday morning and was immediately extinguished by a Forest Department team, said ACF Minguel Fernandes.
A ground fire was also reported at Villian village, and another in dry leaves and grass in Potrem ward of Netravali village, and both were quickly doused to prevent further damage, said ACF Cliff Da Costa who looks after the Netravali Range.
