PANJIM: Goa government has assured the Goa Assembly to start construction of a new market complex at Ela in Old Goa once the entire land is transferred from the Agriculture Department for this purpose.
“The land belongs to Agriculture department. They will have to surrender it and only then we can start constructing the market building. I have already sent the proposal…” Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said.
The question was raised by Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar. “Old Goa is a tourist place and the exposition (St Francis Xavier) is also coming up. The present market complex is in a dilapidated condition,” he said.
Parrikar reiterated to render all help to make the project a reality. “In principal, I agree to the market complex. I don’t have any problem. I will start the project once the entire land is available,” he said.
In a written reply, the chief minister said that GSIDC has a proposal to construct the market complex at Ela and that agriculture department has not transferred the additional land to Se Old Goa Panchayat for the market complex.
To another question by Leader of Opposition Pratapsing Rane on the vegetable vendors occupying the space along the Mahatma Gandhi statue vicinity, Parrikar said the vendors were removed, however, women hawkers selling local vegetables are allowed as they vacate the place at the end of the day.
