MARGAO: Newly-elected MMC Chairperson Ghanashayam Shirodkar has vowed to clean up the Sonsoddo garbage dump, and turn it into a ‘sight-seeing’ area within the next two years.

Shirodkar visited the site on Saturday, accompanied by fellow MMC councillors from the Goa Forward Party camp.

“I have instructed the staff to clean up the office here, for the comfort of councillors who wish to visit and supervise the works. I will spend half my day here,” he added. Ghanashyam appealed to all the councillors to visit the Sonsoddo site on a regular basis, to keep a watch on developments.

“I want help, not only from my councillors, but also from NGOs and the concerned MLAs, in order to resolve the long-pending Sonsoddo issue, once and for all. My intention is to work and not to beg for the chair,” he remarked.

Shirodkar said that all 25 councillors of the MMC were equally responsible for anything that goes wrong within the Margao jurisdiction, and all of them should take responsibility and work towards resolving the mess at Sonsoddo, that plagues Margao and Fatorda.  Assuring that he would create a change within the next 100 days, Shirodkar said he would initially not take up the legacy dump issue, but tackle the garbage generated on a daily basis and later dumped inside the old treatment plant. Later, he also visited the historical Lohia Maidan at

Margao and took stock of the ongoing beautification work.
