Will discuss with panel before finalising MMC chairperson: Digambar

MARGAO:  Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said that he would finalise the name of the new Chairperson to take charge of the civic body, after discussing the matter with the councillors of the Model Margao panel. Kamat told Herald that they have seven days to select the councillor for the post of chairperson.  

“Lyndon has just submitted his resignation from the post and that needs to be accepted by the Directorate of Municipal Administration. We have not yet finalized the name of the councillor from the panel of Model Margao to take charge of the civic body,” he said.

However, sources said that Damodar Shirodkar is the front runner for the post of chairperson. Shirodkar had initially split from the Margao MLA’s panel, over the issue of selecting a chairperson last year. 

While councillor Damodar alias Damu Shirodkar may now be the first choice of the Margao MLA, the name of Sagun Naik, another councillor from Kamat’s group, may be pushed for the post, if other councillors from Model Margao decline to support Damu. 

It is pertinent to note that there is yet to be an agreement amongst the ruling group of councillors as to who should be chosen as the next chairperson, as the Goa Forward Party panel is ready to support whoever is selected from the Model Margao panel, a panel backed by Margao MLA.
