PANJIM: The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), a coalition partner in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Goa has said that their stand on dual citizenship would be in line with the Constitution of India. Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Thursday had said that permitting dual citizenship is not possible legally.
“Does the Constitution of India allow dual citizenship? We will go by what the Constitution says,” MGP President Pandurang (Dipak) Dhavalikar said, hinting that the party does not favour dual citizenship.
The chief minister had said that persons whose births are registered in Portugal, because they were born before the State was liberated from Portuguese rule, need not worry as that does not amount to dual citizenship.
Union minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had recently stated that the Centre will appoint an authority to tackle the dual citizenship issue in Goa.
On the medium of instruction (MoI) issue, MGP that has been supporting the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Mach (BBSM) in its battle against the government decision to give grants to English medium primary schools said the government would resolve the issue before its term ends.
Dhavalikar said the government will take the right decision on MoI issue before completing its term ending in March 2017.
