The age-old Banyan tree which was trimmed and uprooted in the intervening night of Friday-Saturday and translocated on new football ground at Campal, has been yet again relocated 25 meters further. On Monday morning workers were seen applying wet mud on the tree for its nourishment and better growth.
In a surprising turn of events, the translocation of the age-old banyan tree which was done on Saturday evening at the campal new football ground, has been relocated again by the authorities. The relocation decision was taken after environmentalists staged a protest against Smart City project officials cutting the century-old tree. Earlier the tree was relocated on the ground around 100 – 150 meters from the road and on Monday morning, the tree was shifted again 25 meters away from where it was relocated.
The citizens of Panjim expressed concern over the Banyan tree’s health. Amidst all the ongoing concern, the major question arises is that, will the tree get enough water to survive in the summer till the monsoon arrives? Environmentalists, who were protesting against the felling of two age-old by the Smart City project officials, stated that these trees are the main oxygen source. Destroying them will result in the city’s destruction.
