MARGAO: Though the set deadline for the beginning of the CCTV surveillance system of Margao got breached, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has managed to take important steps in the last couple of days, in the direction of having the cameras started. However, sources suggest that none of the existing CCTVs have started functioning.
However, the new MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has got cracking on the issue immediately after taking over. He has issued NOCs to the Power and IT Departments to clear the way for the installation of the CCTVs. He told Herald, “We will also bear the cost of the Annual Maintenance of the system, which is at least Rs 2 lakhs”.
In a meeting held earlier by the South Goa District Collector, a deadline to check and start some of the 37 CCTVs in Margao was set as October 1. The meeting was held to review the work of resuming the CCTV system of Margao, in the backdrop of the murder of jeweller Swapnil Walke,
However, the Margao’s Traffic Police cell informed Herald on Monday, that the South Goa Police Headquarters had not yet received the CCTV feed.
When asked for an update on the situation, the MMC Chief Officer stated that the previous vendor will complete the work of installing the CCTV camera system in Margao. The South Goa Collector will also be holding a review meeting regarding this soon.
