Will not allow to create another Sonsoddo of inert waste: Former MLA

MARGAO: Former MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Damodar alias Damu Naik on Tuesday strongly objected to dumping the Sonsoddo inert waste near the fields at Fatorda on land belonging to the Kadamba Transport Corporation.

“It is wrong to shift the waste from Sonsoddo to another place where another Sonsoddo will be created,” he said while pointing out that the hazardous waste would seep to the ground table and cause more problems for people in the neighbourhood.

“As it is people are facing the COVID threat and to add to that is this another menace that is being thrust on them,” he said adding that apparently it is being done to give an impression that Sonsoddo garbage dump yard has been cleared while at the same time creating another dump yard elsewhere.

Damu recalled that former councillor Monica Dias had always objected to filling up fields and dumping waste in the area where she lived and regretted that following her death, her backyard is being converted into a dump yard.

He further pointed out that no authority has given any permission for dumping the waste there and said the exercise undertaken is totally “unethical and immoral” and said he will oppose it and get the municipality to stop dumping the garbage at Fatorda.
