Will not tolerate any interference from wholesale fish traders: Local fishermen

Say fish traders, mostly outsiders, can stop doing business at wholesale fish market if they don't like the system; Urge govt to start formalin testing lab at the market

MARGAO: Taking serious note of interference from the wholesale fish traders in the management of South Goa Planning and Development (SGPDA) wholesale fish market, on Wednesday a group of local fishermen warned the wholesale traders not to cross the limits.

Addressing a media person, local fishermen said the wholesale fish traders, who are mostly outsiders, can stop doing business here, if they don’t like the system.

The local fishermen alleged that these wholesale fish traders are involved in creating nuisance in the market, besides misbehaving with the local fisherwomen.

Tumakur Rodrigues, a local fisherman said they want peace in the wholesale fish market, and hence the wholesale fish traders need to stop interfering with the system.

“They are free to stop coming to the wholesale fish market, if they have issues here. Those wholesale fish traders must understand one thing and that is this market is not for migrants and outsiders. This market has been started for the benefit of local fishermen”, he said.

He said henceforth the local fishermen will not tolerate any interference from these wholesale fish traders in the market.

“We have even noticed that these wholesale fish traders from outside the State are involved in importing the fish in thermocol boxes, and later those boxes are set on fire, resulting in major air pollution”, claimed Tumakur.

He said they have already filed a complaint in this regard with the SGPDA demanding action.

They urged the government to start the formalin testing lab here which was assured long ago.

Local fishermen also claimed that the wholesale fish market is far better than it was earlier with regards to hygiene.
