Will protect docs, need to tweak State laws, says Health Minister

Condemns rape and murder of trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata; says supports the doctors’ strike and understands their secuirty concerns

PANJIM: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday condemned the rape and murder of trainee doctor of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and said that there is a need to tweak state laws for protection of the doctors.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “I strongly condemn the recent horrific incident in West Bengal involving the heinous crime against an innocent doctor. My heartfelt condolences go to the victim’s family. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers.”

“To ensure the safety of our doctors, we are also implementing crucial changes at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), including the installation of security cameras and revising laws to better protect doctors. We fully support the Goa doctors’ strike and understand their concerns. Swift and strict action should be taken against the perpetrators,” he said.

Rane said,” This incident reminds us of the challenges our healthcare workers face daily. Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi has consistently emphasized the importance of safeguarding our medical professionals, recognizing their vital role in building a healthy nation. We must unite to ensure the safety and dignity of those who dedicate their lives to saving others.”

Rane said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee being a woman doesn’t understand the sentiments of the women. 

“Not everything needs to be seen as a political affair. We are giving commitment to our doctors in Goa that whatever protection, CCTV surveillance and any of their other demands are there, along with supporting the Kolkata incident, we strongly support them in it. We are with the doctors,” he said. 

AI-powered app launched for assistance of cancer patients

PANJIM: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) -powered app for the assistance of patients, specially those suffering from cancer. 

Speaking to reporters, he said, “The plan is to implement the app with the help of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The focus will be on cancer care and treatment. It will have details of how care should be taken once a patient suffering from cancer undergoes surgery.”

“Our aim is to take to the people. I think we will be able to implement functioning of the app within two months. Patients will be able to ask questions in multiple languages which include Hindi, Marathi, English and Konkani,” Rane said.    

“Officers have been instructed to take stringent action against bus drivers, who drive buses under the influence of alcohol,” Tuenkar said.
