PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday assured the Goa Government Employees Association (GGEA) that henceforth the government will stop giving extension in-service to retired government employees and those already given will be curtailed.
Sawant gave the assurance to the GGEA delegation, who urged him to stop all service extensions as it was blocking timely promotions.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the GGEA said that there is growing discontent amongst the government servants that the government servants who retire from service after attaining the age of superannuation are given service extensions and also sometimes are appointed on contract basis after retirement.
“Though the number of those working on service extension after retirement has been reduced initially but at present still extension in-service after retirement is being continued in many offices and departments are also moving files for asking extension despite the fact that GGEA is against the grant of service extensions. GGEA feels that it is high time to end the subject of service extensions in Goa permanently,” Association president Abhay Mandrekar said.
The Association has also demanded implementation of the old pension scheme to all government employees, who joined after August 8, 2005 onwards.
“Now almost 18 years have passed since the pension scheme was implemented. Now employees have started retiring from government jobs,” the Association has pointed out.
The Association further pointed out that in the new pension scheme there is no provision for fixed pension after retirement for government employees and even after the death of any employee there is no provision for families who are dependent on them. The association has also demanded to maintain parity in pay scales.
It has claimed that while implementing the Sixth Central Pay Commission’s recommendations, the Goa government had ignored selective pay up-gradation, which was carried out when the Fifth Pay Commission pay scales were in force.
It has said that there is a pressing need to settle the issues as frustration is developing in the minds of government employees which affected their performance.
