Leaking Ponda market complex causes hardships for locals; vendors seek permanent solution to problem

PONDA: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have blown off a portion of the Ponda mart complex roof sheet, making lives difficult for the vendors and customers visiting the market. The vendors have urged immediate repairs of the roof.

Due to heavy rains over the past two days, one roof sheet of the market was blown off, causing leakage from the roof. Locals claimed that this has become a problem during every monsoon.

Compounding their woes, the rain water accumulated on the floor near the fair price shop, is posing risk to the customers since the floor becomes slippery. Several consumers visit the complex to buy a monthly ration quota. Dustbins are kept to collect the water leaking from the roof.

There was an incident in the past wherein one consumer who had gone to the market complex, slipped and sustained head injury.

Vishal Fadte from Ponda said beside fair price shops, there are also few other shops and a municipal library in the market complex, along with an Anganwadi, which is frequented by several people. Vendors, shop owners and people at large have urged the Ponda Municipal Council for a permanent solution to the leakages.

Meanwhile, several trees fell in Ponda due to windy conditions. At Priol, several trees fell and four electric poles collapsed due to tree fall. The power department personnel were busy restoring power supply, which was hit due to tree falling on electricity wires and poles.
