VASCO: Calling the sinking of floating dry dock at Western India Shipyard Limited (WISL) as national disaster, the WISL workers union on Thursday demanded immediate intervention of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and other concerned authorities from state administration to avoid a marine disaster due to possibility of a oil spill.
Union leader Alexander Pacheco said “This floating dry dock is first of its own kind in whole of Asia. It has four cranes which contain hydraulic oil, and then there is diesel oil in the pumps and waste oil in other chambers. If by chance there is any spillage of these oils then not only Vasco bay but even other coast of Goa would face severe marine polluted. The oil spill would also leave the fishermen community to face hardships as their livelihood would be at risk and hence it is high time that the government authorities should step in and issue necessary directions before any disaster takes place in waters” he told.
