With beautification work halted, re-open Margao Ring Road, urge citizens

MARGAO: A group of citizens from Margao on Tuesday demanded that the order for the closure of the Ring Road from Konkan Railway Station to Power House Junction be withdrawn immediately.

Addressing reporters, Convenor of the Shadow Council for Margao, Savio Coutinho, said that there was no council resolution seeking the closure of the road.

Displaying information obtained under the RTI Act from the District Collector, Coutinho said that the closure order of the Collector and Traffic Cell was issued specifically for the beautification work commissioned along the ring road. “However, ever since the order came into force on November 24, there has been absolutely no work in progress along the stretch,” alleged Coutinho.

“There has been no construction activity here for the past two months; hence, to continue keeping this stretch closed upto May 22, 2023, is totally absurd,” he added.

“It is even more amusing to note how the Chairperson of MMC, who incidentally is also the ward councillor, states that the public is happy with the closure,” said Adv Snehal Onskar.  The ring road was conceived way back in 1985-90, and even though Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has governed Margao for almost 30 years now, he has failed to complete it,  said Coutinho.
