ponda:Khandepar locals fear there could be major accidents at the Opa-Khandepar junction as the National Highway (NH) traffic from the new Khandepar bridge has been diverted towards Ponda through the service road.
It may be recalled that it has been two years since there has been no approach road to the new Khandepar bridge and since then, the traffic has been diverted through the right hand side of the service road of the bridge.
However, over the past few days, PWD has started work on another parallel service road to the bridge to divert vehicles, which according to the locals is highly risky.
Rocky Dias, a local questioned why the authorities and political leaders did not instead try and solve the root cause of the problem that is completing the approach road to the bridge, which he adds should have been done at the time the bridge was inaugurated.
Another local, Sandeep Parkar explained that in the absence of the approach road, vehicles coming from Belgaum were diverted from the Khandepar bridge from the service road.
He feared that at the Opa-Khandepar junction, where the four parallel roads meet, is narrow and that’s why there is the danger of accidents occurring, even fatal ones.
