With monsoon round the corner, govt races to repair Mandrem roads

PERNEM: Roads in Mandrem, which had been excavated for the laying of underground power cables, are set to be repaired at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore. Work is expected to be completed before the monsoon arrives.

The electricity department had begun laying underground cables to reduce frequent power cuts during the monsoon due to trees falling on overhead power lines. Excavation of the roads, however, had caused a lot of inconvenience to motorists – particularly two-wheeler riders who found it difficult to navigate the damaged stretches – leading to minor altercations and accidents.

Tuemsar panch Sulaksha Naik said that while doubts have been raised over the quick repairs of the dug-up roads, the local MLA himself is following up on the matter with the government, and all restoration work is expected to be completed soon.

A government official, however, said that soling the roads would be done in the monsoon itself. The official claimed that the tarmac would get cured better if work was undertaken during the monsoon.
