With monsoon round the corner, Margao citizens worried as dug roads still remain open, unrepaired

Pose danger and inconvenience commuters; disrupt daily travel; concerned citizens, urge authorities to take the issue seriously; prevent problems from going bad to worse during the monsoon season

MARGAO: The non-repaired roads, dug for the sewerage network in Margao, have indeed caused inconvenience to commuters and sparked concern among athe general public, especially with the imminent arrival of the monsoon season.

These unfinished road works not only disrupt daily travel but also pose safety hazards and exacerbate worries about infrastructure damage during heavy rains.

The roads dug for sewerage chambers and connections in major areas of Margao have not been levelled or tarred and causing frustration among citizens who are demanding prompt restoration.

Near the railway over bridge in Margao, nearly 10 sites can be observed where roads have been dug for sewerage chambers, but restoration efforts have been left unattended. This neglect of crucial restoration work exacerbates the inconvenience faced by commuters and residents in the area.

It may be recalled that Uttam Parsekar, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), had previously stated that his office had issued instructions to the relevant departments to repair the roads or, at the very least, ensure they are levelled to minimize inconvenience for commuters.

However, despite these assurances, the sewerage department continues to dig up the roads, exacerbating the inconvenience faced by residents and commuters.

Savio Fernandes expressed his anger and highlighted the dangerous situation at both ends of the railway over bridge in Margao, describing them as death traps.

The characterization of these locations as death traps emphasizes the urgent need for immediate action to address the hazards and ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists navigating these areas, he stated.

“The chambers are left filled with mud, making it perilous even to drive a two-wheeler through the area,” said Fernandes.

He further lamented the absence of even a single policeman at the site, which has led to a traffic mess in the area.

Mohan Naik, another concerned citizen, urged the relevant departments to take the issue seriously to prevent major problems during the upcoming monsoon season.

“It will be a mess in the rainy season if the road dug for constructing sewage chambers is not repaired immediately. One lane of the road from both ends of the bridge has been blocked, and traffic cannot move forward over here,” he stated.
