MARGAO, MAY 4

Dark clouds are hovering out in the sky with unseasonal rains hitting the State in the last few days, but there’s no urgency shown by the Margao Municipal Council to get the main nullahs desilted this year.
Be it the Old market nullah or the one passing by the South Goa Planning and Development, work has not yet commenced on the desilting of these water bodies till date.
These two water nullahs, besides the storm water drains acts as a drainage of rain water from the city to River Sal at Mungul. Sadly, both these nullahs not only remained heavily silted, but have been left polluted by the discharge of sewage waters and other waste.
When Herald contacted MMC Chief Officer, Savio Coutinho, he only said that the Water Resources department has been intimated by the Council to take up the work on a war footing. “We have discussed the matter of desilting of these nullahs on a priority basis with the Water Resources department. The department has assured to take up the work by deploying heavy machinery”, he said.
Incidentally, though the Chairperson has claimed that pre-monsoon works in the city is going on as scheduled, some of the opposition Councilors pointed out that the work is yet to start in their wards.
Former Chairperson Johnson Fernandes on Tuesday took up the matter with the Chairperson after the special meeting, pointing out that pre-monsoon work has not yet commenced in his ward till date.
