MARGAO: Built for the convenience of commuters nearly a decade ago, the winding Arlem-Nuvem Bypass has still not been illuminated, complain road-users who now avoid the shortcut at nighttime, for their own safety.
With fields on both sides and no streetlights, locals say they cannot use the Bypass as it is mainly used by heavy vehicles at night, who tend to speed down the road with their headlights on high-beam, blinding other road-users and pushing them off the link road.
“The speeding trucks and other heavy vehicles make it more difficult to travel on the Arlem-Nuvem Bypass. Being a busy road, the authorities concerned should have taken the initiative
to illuminate it,” said Christopher Dias, a resident of Borda.
Rishikant Borkar, another citizen, informed Herald that the absence of streetlights has resulted in illegal activities on the stretch, which has also become a parking spot for trucks on the Arlem side. Citizens have also demanded that the MLAs of Nuvem and Curtorim should take up the issue to prevent accidents on the Bypass.
