Woman arrested for kidnapping niece

VALPOI, JULY 24
Valpoi police on Friday arrested a woman on charges of kidnapping and severely assaulting her niece from Brahma Karmali-Sattari.
According to Valpoi police, the incident took place on July 16, when the accused, Snehal Gaonkar, a native of Bicholim but married at Sattari, visited Poriem on July 16 at about 11 am. She picked up her niece from her school at Poriem and took her to an isolated place in Bicholim where she confined her in a room.
When the school was over for the day, the girl’s father went to collect her from the Valpoi bus stand, but she could not be found till evening.
Suspecting Gaonkar’s involvement in the disappearance of his daughter, the father contacted Valpoi police later in the night.Valpoi police along with their counterparts in Bicholim went to the site and managed to locate the missing girl.
The girl’s father told police that Gaonkar had kidnapped his daughter to settle scores following a rift among family members some months ago.
The accused was arrested on Friday evening, after the father complained that his daughter had been admitted at GMC due to severe injuries, following the assault by Gaonkar.
Investigations are in progress under the supervision of Police Inspector Shivram Vaigankar.
