Woman killed by falling tree branch: GGF wants officials booked for negligence

Say had govt officials acted on complaints, fatal accident would not have occurred; demand FIR against District Magistrate, Deputy Conservator of Forest and Executive Engineer and Public Works Department

MARGAO: Expressing frustration over the death of a lady rider after a branch of a cotton tree came crashing on her two-wheeler at Navelim on Tuesday morning, branch, 

Green Goa Foundation (GGF) has now demanded for an FIR to be registered against the District Magistrate, Deputy Conservator of Forest and Executive Engineer, Public Works Department and 

appropriate action to be initiated against them for failing to act on time. 

Raison Almeida, Chairman of GGF on Friday filed a complaint in this regard with the Margao Town police and demanded immediate action. 

In the complaint, GGF stated that since the year 2011, they had made several representations to the district magistrate, South Goa and other concerned authorities with respect to the branches of trees hanging precariously on National Highway-66 between Margao and Canacona in South district. 

The fatal accident would not have occurred, if the authorities had acted on time, said the complainant. We had brought to the notice of the authorities that the weak and hanging branches could fall at any moment, especially during the monsoons, besides also being informed that several accidents had already taken place due to branches falling on commuters, said Almeida. 

The complainant states that the last  complaint was filed was in July 2022, however, despite the complaints and news reports on the local dailies, the local authorities i.e. the District Magistrate, Conservator of Forests and the PWD had failed to take any action till date.
