Woman robbed in broad daylight

MARGAO: A short vacation proved costly for this elderly woman from Dhobitalao-Mumbai when she was robbed while in the process of returning home after a stay with her son at Margao on Thursday.

The incident also exposed chinks in the security at the Margao railway station, leaving passengers shocked and surprised over the daring robbery as 76-year-old Idalina Estibeiro was robbed of her bag containing gold ornaments and cash amounting to Rs 2.68 lakh.
The incident occurred on Thursday at 9.30 am after her son Ligorio dropped her at the Margao railway station “My son got down from the train when it started the journey. There were two male persons in my boogie sitting on the opposite seat.  When the train reached near the first foot bridge, a person wearing black jacket, long pant, aged around 22 years, entered inside the train through the door and snatched my shoulder bag”, Idalina narrated.
Before she could utter “mughe bag, mughe bag (my bag, my bag), the miscreant made good his escape with the bag containing six gold bangles, two gold chains, cash of Rs 8,000, a currency note of 100 UAE Dirham, besides a pan card and voting card.
While the Konkan railway police station has registered an offense against unknown persons, the daring robbery has sent a grim reminder over the safety of passengers, especially senior citizens and women passengers at the Margao railway station and those travelling in the train.
Relatives of the victim have now asked the Police and the KR authorities to give the CCTV footage in order to establish the identity of the miscreant.
Incidentally, the robbery in the moving train has taken place around the old station premises, which has been a hotbed of anti-socials and where many a person crossing the footbridge were waylaid and robbed of their gold ornaments.
