PANJIM: A woman walking towards the Goa Medical College bus stop got her foot stuck in a badly-designed metal grate covering a cross drain at Bambolim on Saturday. The fire brigade officials freed the lady after a one-and-a-half hour-long rescue

operation.

According to sources, the woman named Sharad Gawas from Dona Paula was walking towards the GMC bus stop. At around 12.30 pm, on reaching the pedestrian underpass of the flyover, her left foot got stuck in a metal grate covering a cross drain.

The fire brigade was called to rescue her. The firemen took one-and-a-half hours to use hydraulic tools, bend and cut the grate, to release the woman’s foot. As the incident happened just next to a busy underpass, it resulted in a traffic jam on the road, which lasted an hour.

This road is frequented by many pedestrians who work at the GMC and also by patients and their attendants and care takers. Fireman Nilesh Shinde said, “The gaps in the metal grate installed here are too big. Anyone can get stuck in this faultycover. The authorities need to take necessary action and change the structure of the cover so such incidents are avoided in the future,” he said.
