PANJIM: There is an old formula in crime which is again being reworked in Goa. Thieves posing as police officers are stopping women, pretending to espouse their safety.
It has come to light that of late thieves are posing as cops and stopping women who are either walking or on two wheelers. Pretending to be interested in the safety of the women, they warn them that there are thieves ahead. After creating fear they then ask them to take off their jewellery and put it in their bags.
When the women are in the process of putting the jewellery in the envelop which is provided to them, the thieves quickly switch the envelopes and make good with the jewellery.
This modus operandi was explained by SP North Shobit Saxena to media on Saturday. Such an incident occurred in Porvorim where Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh worth jewellery was fleeced and police have identified such spots and working on the case.
