PANJIM: Women dominate the education workforce in the Country and Goa is not an exception to it. Of the total 12,192 teaching faculty, employed in the State for classes I to XII, 78 percent are female. The Directorate of Education in its ‘Educational Statistics at a Glance 2018-19,’ has stated that the State has 9,579 female teachers while the male numbers are 2,613 only.
The data reveals that female teachers are dominating all the four stages of school education- primary to higher secondary stage. Educationists are of the opinion that the shift from male to female started in 1990s, when the Central government launched Operation Blackboard, reserving 50 percent of jobs in schools to women.
As per statistics, at the primary level, there are 3,444 female teachers and 329 male teachers. At the middle stage, of the total 2,969, the female teachers are 2300 while the rest 669 are male.
There are total 3,527 teachers at the secondary stage of which 991 are male teachers. The female teachers are 2,536. At the higher secondary level, as many as 1299 are female teachers and 624 male teachers. There are total 1,923 teachers altogether in the higher secondary schools.
Further, of the total 12,192 teachers, almost 3.4 per cent teachers are untrained. Total 421 teachers, that include 350 female and 71 male, are untrained. The figure has however declined compared to 2017-18, that had reported over 550 untrained teachers. The largest chunk of untrained teachers is in unaided schools which are around 187. The government schools have the lowest untrained teachers that are eight.
While DEd is the main pre-requisite for teaching at the pre-primary and primary school level as mandated by the Right to Education Act, a BEd is mandatory for teaching in secondary or higher secondary schools.
