Women flock markets to buy rakhis ahead of Raksha Bandhan

MARGAO: Raksha Bandhan, is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated mainly in India and some other parts of the Indian subcontinent. The festival’s name is a combination of two words: “Raksha”, which means protection, and “Bandhan”, which means bond or tie. Raksha Bandhan signifies the bond of love and protection between siblings, particularly between brothers and sisters.

The central ritual of Raksha Bandhan involves the sister tying a sacred thread called a “rakhi” around her brother’s wrist. The rakhi is usually a colorful thread adorned with decorative elements, and it symbolizes the sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being and protection. In return, the brother gives the sister a gift and promises to protect and support her throughout her life.

Markets are flooded with rakhis to celebrate the flavor of the season. Women flocked to the Margao market to buy rakhis for their brothers. The prices this season range from Rs 10 to Rs 150, one vendor said. He said that he had stocked about 300 rakhis of various varieties.

Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 30, this year.
