Women from Street Providence demand hike in doles

PANJIM: As many as 22 women living in Street Providence visited the office of Women and Child Development Department on Thursday to press for release of their pending doles and hike in it.

They claimed that Rs 2,000 per month was not enough for food, medical and other expenses.

Social activist Rama Kankonkar said that scheme is that those women who have nobody to take care of them will be looked after by NGOs and the NGOs will be paid Rs 2,000 per woman. He asked the government what can be bought with Rs 2,000 when it was claiming that it will create infrastructure for the destitutes.

“When will that infrastructure come up? We are unable to protect these women whose number is more than 60. I would like to ask what happens with the budget of Rs 24,800 crore,” Kankonkar questioned.

Another activist Xencor Polgi said, “Government has money for putting up advertisements at Mopa and Dabolim Airports but it does not have money to spend on these women. When the inflation is so high then is it possible to live on Rs 2,000. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces many schemes. But where are the benefits of those schemes? If the government cannot protect these women then better those running it sit at home.”

Another activist said that the government says that nobody will die of hunger but the fact is that Goa is unable to take care of its mothers and daughters.
