Women, kids living at construction sites are unsafe: Bailancho Ekvott (BE)

Bailancho Ekvott calls for ensuring safety, well-being of kids at construction sites; urges builders and developers to appoint special caretakers

MARGAO: Stating that women and children living at construction sites are unsafe, Bailancho Ekvott (BE) in a fervent plea has urged the authorities and stakeholders to take immediate action in ensuring the safety and well-being of children at construction sites.

The call comes in the wake of a tragic rape and murder of a five-year-old girl at Vasco.

Bailancho Ekvott said that the tragic incident has shaken Vasco and the whole of Goa.

Bailancho Ekvott president Auda Viegas emphasised that such atrocities highlight the urgent need for better protection measures for families, especially children, residing in tin sheds at construction sites.

In a bid to address the immediate concerns, Bailancho Ekvott has urged builders and developers to appoint special caretakers dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the absence of their parents so that there is a protective environment for children and this also alleviates the risks they face.

Viegas pointed out that the current living conditions of labourers and their families pose significant safety risks, with inadequate provisions for their welfare.

She further stressed the importance of mandatory safety measures such as sturdy locks on doors and proper infrastructure to safeguard against such heinous crimes.

Expressing profound concern, Viegas questioned the vulnerability of innocent children to such horrific acts and called for collective responsibility from the Labour Department, panchayats, municipalities, builders, and developers.
