PANJIM: Women representatives from across political parties demanded with the National Women’s Commission that the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) play a proactive role to encourage them in politics.
Dr Satbir Bedi, Member secretary of NWC on Thursday met with the women representatives from various political parties on gender sensitive measures taken during the recent State Assembly elections by the Chief Electoral Office. The meeting was attended by representatives from BJP, Congress, AAP and Goa Su-Raj party.
During the meeting, female representatives opined that considering the high percentage of women participation in the voting process, their participation in politics should also be encouraged by ECI.
In the recently held elections there were only 17 female candidates out of a total 251 in the fray. “ECI also has to give more opportunities to female representatives by encouraging them but not based on money/muscle power,” they said.
Bedi suggested that the women should participate in all spheres of elections right from BLOs, BLAs, polling agents, polling personnel and contesting candidates.
