Won’t allow illegal business: Margao civic body chief

MARGAO: Margao civic body chief Lyndon Pereira on Monday made it clear that no illegal business activity, especially from migrants will be allowed in the municipal jurisdiction.

However, the residents in the State’s commercial capital urged the civic body to initiate strict action against the migrants engaged in illegal businesses in the heart of the town.

He said the civic body has conducted several drives against migrants conducting illegal businesses by the roadsides on a regular basis.

“We are very much serious on the issue pertaining to illegal businesses in Margao and Fatorda. The civic body is engaged in drives and seizing goods from the illegal vendors,” he said.

It is pertinent to note that the chairperson has comes under heavy criticism from some social activists on the issue with regards to tough action initiated by the civic body officials against a 75-year-old newspaper vendor near Ravindra Bhavan, Fatorda on Saturday.  Lyndon said it is not that the civic body is targeting Goan vendors but they are also initiating action against migrants engaged in illegal business activities.

Town residents contacted Herald and complained of the illegal business activities carried out by migrants and called for highlighting the issue.

“Why only drive against the illegal vendors in Fatorda and why not in Margao”, they questioned.

The residents complained that migrants are illegally selling goods by the roadside. They demanded action against all migrants on a regular basis.
