PANJIM: The wooden plank used in the alleged assault on the lawyer Gajanan Sawant and the clothes he wore on the day of the incident have been sent to the Verna forensic lab for further investigation. The District Magistrate has meanwhile recorded the statements of five witnesses in the matter.
It may be recalled that Adv Gajanan Sawant was brutally assaulted by four policemen Sandip Parab, Mahadev Naik, Amrut Nagvenkar and Marcus Gomes in the attached to the Porvorim Police Station while performing his professional duties at Shantinagar, Porvorim on December 8, 2022.
After several days of protests demanding arrests, suspension of the inquiry in the matter was handed over to the Crime Branch. The Crime Branch is presently investigating the case. The court ordered magisterial inquiry into the matter and has started recording statements of Adv Sawant recently. He has already deposed before the Pernem DySP in the preliminary inquiry of the accusations against the police.
Meanwhile, the victim lawyer is wary of the hurried investigation in the matter before Retd Justice RMS Khandeparkar.
