Work on approach road for new Khandepar bridge begins

PONDA: Land-filling for the construction of a much-needed approach road to the new Khandepar bridge finally began this week.

Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said work on the ramp would begin after the monsoon and would be completed by December this year.

The bridge was inaugurated in 2018 without an approach road on the Ponda side as a matter pertaining to land acquisition to construct the road was sub-judice. While the case was settled two years ago, the procedure for construction of the ramp was not initiated.

In the absence of the approach road, the busy Opa junction is used as a diversion for heavy NH 4-A traffic that enters from the highway’s service road, making the area highly prone to accidents and putting the lives of several school students who await buses at the junction at risk.

Numerous accidents have already been reported at this site.
