Work on Calangute sewage pumping station takes off

MAPUSA: Work of constructing a sewage pumping station at Naikawaddo, Calangute is underway.
After several rounds of consultation with JICA officials and the local MLA, the planned sewage pumping station in the village is being constructed on the land earlier acquired by the government.
Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins informed Herald on Wednesday that the sewage pumping station work began four days ago.
Locals are still objecting to the sewage pumping station at Naikawaddo, on ground that the station is being built is in a residential area and they fear it would emit a foul smell.
According to the authorities, the pumping station is essential to complete the sewage network planned for Calangute.
The sarpanch said that the sewage plant was the need of the hour to solve the sewage problem in Calangute. “I know that the people are not in favour of this pumping station coming up here at Naikwaddo, but we tried our level best to check if it could be set up close to the original place identified. The PWD and JICA carried out a check at the new location but it failed the feasibility test. Whatever we have decided is solely in the greater interest of the people of Calangute,” Martins said.
