SANGUEM: In a bid to ease traffic congestion across Margao, various government authorities have called for the re-design of the traffic plan for the ring road from Colva junction to the erstwhile Cine Lata.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said that work on the long-pending Ring Road project would be taken up once again, and claimed that the project will not affect any houses along its path.
Accompanied by officials of the Town and Country Planning Department, Traffic Cell, and the Sewerage Corporation, Kamat on Saturday held an inspection at Comba to deliberate on solutions to the problem of traffic snarls in the area.
Speaking to reporters Kamat said that the authority concerned has been asked to redesign the traffic plan of the ring road.
“This report will be submitted by the first week of January 2023,” said the Margao MLA.
He said that major traffic congestion can be witnessed near the railway crossing at Comba and even the management of schools in the area had complained about the same. “The North-Main sewage pipeline will be also commissioned by the end of December, giving scope for an extra lane on this stretch,” said Kamat.
He said that as per reports from the authority constructing the road, not a single house will be affected if the ring road project is completed. Even so, a scheme for rehabilitation is under consideration as well,” he added.
The ring road in Margao was proposed in 2004 during the BJP rule when Kamat was a minister. The road was to be constructed in three phases—Old Market to Comba, Comba to Apollo Hospital via Cine Lata and from Apollo Hospital to Ravanfond Circle, joining the Bypass. The government completed phase one and three, but phase two could not be completed due to objections from a few residents.
