Work on Ponda’s golden jubilee project begins

Ponda: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) finally began constructing its golden jubilee project in the heart of Ponda city on Monday. The project, which had been delayed for years after the foundation stone was laid, will be constructed with 70 tonnes of steel.

The erstwhile Congress government had sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the project, although it now stands at 2.5 crore with interest accumulated during the delay. The delay was due to technical problems and loopholes in the tendering process.
PMC councillor Vektesh Naik, who monitored the foundation-laying work said, “Around 70 tonnes of steel will be used for the project, which will be first of its kind in the State. Except for bridges, no such quantity of steel is used for constructions. The building, to be constructed through GSIDC, will consist of ground plus six stories.”
Two multiplexes will occupy two floors. Food courts and a library will also be present, while spaces will be provided on rent for commercial purposes to generate revenue for the PMC. In the basement, two tanks will store water supplied by the PWD, while another will be used for rainwater harvesting. A parking lot will also be constructed behind the building.
Naik added that the project’s cost was likely to increase, but the government had assured to provide funds to meet the construction cost.
