Margao: Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA urged the public no to panic and stated that the work on the six-lane elevated project at Porvorim will commence only holding a review.
“The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will hold a meeting to review the proposed work, its preparedness, feasibility study and alternate road arrangement and the government will take a call after the directions issued by the CM are abided. Even locals panchayats will be taken into confidence,” Khaunte added.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Khaunte said that the work has not commenced as yet and disclosed that the government has asked the National Highways to submit their plan and are the authorities were in the process of starting alternate roads.”
Khaunte emphasised that with proper streamlining of the work, there will be minimal disturbance when the infrastructure work starts. The Rs 500 crore plus project, involving a 5.2 km long elevated road, is expected to ease traffic congestion on the busy road stretch.
On a different note, Khaunte urged the traffic police to refrain from adding to the woes of people travelling on the busy Porvorim stretch by holding up traffic to issue fines to violators. “Traffic police are advised against stopping the vehicles and challaning them on the Porvorim stretch from Guirim to Mandovi Bridges,” Khaunte said, noting that traffic is always blocked at this stretch and stopping vehicles makes matters worse.
Khaunte was briefing the media after the monsoon preparedness meeting, highlighting the importance of effective communication and coordination between disaster management cells and panchayat members of Socorro, Penha De Franca, and Salvador Do Mundo in Porvorim.
