Work on rebuilding Curchorem fish market to start in October

CURCHOREM: Rebuilding of the Curchorem fish market is likely to start in the first week of October as the local municipality has awarded the tender for the same.
The fish market was demolished after a main wooden beam broke and the roof came down along with some sheets.
According to municipal Chairperson Balkrishna (Pinty) Hoardkar, the tender has been already awarded and the work to rebuild the market at an estimated cost of Rs 16 lakh would most likely started in the first week of October.
When asked why the municipality was rebuilding the market instead of repairing it, Hodarkar said that it had been already planned to construct a new fish market at existing Kadamba Bus Stand soon after the bus stand was shifted to a new site at near the Ambedkar circle.
“The new modern fish market would be constructed at the existing KTC bus stand after shifting it to the new site as we exchanged our land near the Ambedkar circle with KTC existing bus stand land,” Hodarkar said.
The Portuguese era fish market was in a dilapidated and unhygienic condition. Therefore, the fish vendors were repeatedly demanding that it be repaired or reconstructed. However, the authorities delayed to fulfill their demand for a long time citing various reasons.
