Work on St Cruz MRF starts under police protection

Villagers said that they are contemplating filing a review petition before the High Court, where the matter is posted for further hearing on August 17.

PANJIM: The government authorities on Saturday started the work for the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at St Cruz under police protection.

But when the villagers went there they were told by the authorities and the police that the work has started as per the directives of the High Court of Bombay at Goa.

Former St Cruz sarpanch Mariano Araujo, who also rushed to the site said that he and his sister-in-law sarpanch Sonu De Araujo had tried to shift the MRF to an alternate site, which was also identified and that 70 per cent of the work including a shed was erected. But before he could go ahead with the work, some panchayat members played politics and toppled his sister-in-law three months before the panchayat polls.

Araujo said that the new sarpanch Edwin Dias filed an affidavit that the panchayat will set up the MRF but failed to do so and that the court has now issued a contempt of court proceedings against him. He said that the MRF was for treating dry garbage and not wet waste.

However, the villagers said that they are contemplating filing a review petition before the High Court, where the matter is posted for further hearing on August 17.
